Privacy policy

Last updated 21 October 2026

The Dictator is a free game in your browser, with no accounts and no cookies of its own. Your progress stays on your device. This page says what leaves it, who receives it, why, and for how long.

1. Who is responsible

The controller under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is:

Newton’s Games
2093 Philadelphia Pike #9023
Claymont, DE 19703
United States
Email: [email protected]

We have no establishment in the EU. We are not required to appoint a data protection officer. Write to the address above with any question about your data.

2. In short

3. Visiting the site

The site runs on Microsoft Azure (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, USA): the pages in the USA, the stored front pages, leaderboard entries and playtest answers in the Netherlands. Every request passes through Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc., San Francisco, USA), which delivers the site quickly and filters attacks. Both receive what any web server receives: your IP address, the address requested, the time, your browser’s user-agent and the referring page. They process it on our behalf under data processing agreements and are certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. If Cloudflare suspects automated traffic, it may set a short-lived security cookie.

We also use your IP address for a few minutes to limit how many requests one address can make. We do not store it.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, a site that works and cannot be abused; for the security cookie, § 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG.

4. What is kept on your device

The game keeps its settings, your progress, the random player id and name for the daily leaderboard (section 8) and, if you have one, your playtester session in your browser’s local storage. They leave your device only as described here. Clearing this site’s data in your browser deletes them, and your progress with them.

Legal basis: § 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG, strictly necessary for the game you asked to play.

5. Counting visits (GoatCounter)

We count visits with GoatCounter (Martin Tournoij, Ireland; servers in Germany and Finland), without cookies and without storing anything on your device. For each page and for a few steps of play (a game started, the first year, the ending, a share), it receives the page or step, the referring page, your screen size and the name of the shared link that brought you. It uses your IP address and user-agent only to tell your country and browser and to avoid counting a visit twice, and stores neither. We see only totals.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, knowing whether the game is played and how people find it, without tracking anyone.

6. The newspaper written by AI

The game’s newspapers are written by AI from the facts of your game: the year, the cards played, the numbers, the ending. Our server sends those facts, and nothing about you, to OpenAI (OpenAI Ireland Ltd, Dublin) and Replicate (Replicate, Inc., San Francisco, USA). Until a front page is published, its picture is loaded from Replicate, which then sees your IP address as any web server would.

Legal basis for loading the picture: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, showing the newspaper you asked for.

7. Front pages you publish

A front page is published only when you share it. Its text, picture and the facts of the game are then public at its own address and in the day’s list at dictator.one/news. No name, player id or IP address is stored with it. It stays online until we remove it; send us its address to have it removed.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR, the sharing you asked for, and Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, an archive of the game’s newspapers.

8. The daily leaderboard

Your first finished game of Today’s coup goes to the leaderboard automatically: a random player id made by your browser, your display name, the moves you played and the result. Others see the display name and the result. The name is made up for you (“Colonel Rubberstamp 17”) until you choose one; don’t choose your real name unless you want it public. Entries stay as long as the leaderboard runs; tell us the name and the day to have yours deleted.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, a daily challenge players compare themselves in.

9. Feedback

Feedback from the game reaches us by email through Resend (Resend, Inc., San Francisco, USA): your note, your email address if you give one, and your game’s record (cards and numbers). We use the address only to reply, and delete feedback at the latest 12 months after the last message.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, improving the game; Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR for a reply you asked for.

10. Playtesting

With a playtester link, the game asks a few questions after each game. Your answers are stored with a random tester id, your game’s record, the game’s version and the kind of device. We use them only to improve the game and delete them at the latest 24 months after the playtest ends. Answering is voluntary.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, improving the game.

11. Donations

Donating opens PayPal (PayPal (Europe) S.à r.l. et Cie, S.C.A., Luxembourg), which is responsible for what happens there. PayPal tells us your name, email address and the amount, which we keep as long as tax law requires.

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) and (c) GDPR.

12. Your rights

You may ask for access to your data, its correction, deletion or restriction, or a copy to take elsewhere (Art. 15 to 20 GDPR). You may object at any time to processing based on our legitimate interests (Art. 21). With no accounts, we can find your data only from what you tell us: a display name and day, a front page’s address, or the email you wrote from. You may also complain to the data protection authority where you live or work.
